Our vision
Midwives work in partnership with women to ensure a positive pregnancy and birth experience that supports healthy families in our community.
Our services
Continuity - around 75% of women who give birth at Waitemata have a self-employed Lead Maternity Carer (midwife, GP or obstetrician). We offer a range of continuity-of-care services for women who opt to have a Waitemata DHB-employed midwife as their Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) including our community team or Maori midwife team.
Labour and birth care - core hospital midwives provide labour and birth care for women who have a community midwife, and work collaboratively with GP or Obstetrician LMCs to provide care for labour. For all women, regardless of LMC, we provide a second midwife for birth support.
Postnatal care - we have an average ratio of one midwife to six women on the postnatal wards. Both hospitals are 'baby friendly accredited' with an 80% average exclusive breastfeeding rate on discharge.
Complex care - we also provide midwifery care to women with complicated pregnancies requiring a multidisciplinary approach.
