Special care baby units
Both Waitakere and North Shore Hospitals have a Level II Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). SCBUs care for babies born at 32 weeks gestation and older, or weighing 1500gm or more. Full-term babies with medical difficulties are also cared for in the units, which have a mixture of high-dependency cots and "feeder and grower" cots for babies requiring less intensive monitoring.
