General practitioners (GPs) - your family doctor - and the nurses and pharmacists they work with should be the first health professionals you contact when feeling unwell.
GPs provide primary health care, which covers a broad range of out-of-hospital services including general wellness, health education and counselling, disease prevention and screening, foot health, oral health, and on-going care for those with chronic conditions.
Primary Health Organisations (PHOs)
Primary Health Organisations (PHOs) are funded by District Health Boards to provide primary health care services for the enrolled population within their geographic location. There are six PHOs in the Waitemata region which coordinate the services employing staff directly or through provider members. If you would like to find out more about the PHO in your area, please
download a list of PHO contact details.
Some of the region’s GP practices publish information about their services on the internet –
find out if the GPs in your area are online. Waitemata DHB is currently working with the PHOs to assist in getting more of their GP practices online.
